Have Apron will Travel

A member of a regular lodge – like Babergh 8122 – under UGLE can visit and even join hundreds of lodges all over England & Wales.

Our treasurer WB Michael Wheeler (born in Sudbury) has spent a lot of his working life in Leeds – and a lot of time traveling between the two.

Many years ago he joined Zetland Lodge 1311 which meets at Castle Grove Masonic Hall in Headingly. He refers to Zetland as his “foster mother” lodge.

Sadly Zetland lost five worthy brothers during the last two years.  Michael has served Zetland in various offices and has now been installed as their Worshipful Master for the year from November.

Five Babergh brethren made the 200 miles journey to Leeds to support Michael at the unique Installation Ceremony (as befits a Lodge that is nearly 152 years old).  The festive board afterwards was one of the largest post pandemic events at The Hall for a single Lodge.

Traditional Toasts followed for the entertainment of all and the survivors (which included all the Babergh brethren present, who fortunately were staying a short walk away)  kept the Castle Grove bar staff busy until ‘last orders’ were called at midnight.

Michael hopes to organise more ‘fraternal visits’ between Babergh 8122 and Zetland 1311 during his year in office as time, commitments and the weather allow.

Our picture shows Michael (4th from left)  at the end of the Installation wearing the Zetland Master’s Collar and Hall Stone Jewel alongside his wardens to his left and distinguished provincial visitors to his right including The Assistant Provincial Grand Master for Yorkshire West Riding WB Ian Lewis.
